“Sing me a song….of a lass that is gone…say could that lass be I? Merry of soul he sailed on a day…over the sea to Skye.” Don’t mind me, I’m just singing the intro to the Outlander series! Anyways…onto day 5!
We checked out of our hotel and were so sad to say goodbye to the lovely hotel and the amazing staff. Did I mention that we had a bagpiper calling us out to dinner the night before?? But onward to visit a castle! We stopped at Cawdor castle, which is dubbed the most romantic castle in the Highlands. We explored the castle and the most beautiful garden. From there we went on our way to Loch Ness. Of course, we got a lost trying to find the main road, and the lanes were really narrow, and the drivers drive super fast on a two way road, and my sister was stressed the entire time…but nothing beats seeing the wonderful views of Scotland from the comfort of your own rental car! I’d never seen so much green before! We managed to find the main part of town of Fort Augustus and found some parking. We knew we wanted to take a boat trip on the lake so we went there first, bought our tickets, then found some food at a cafe. We ended up chatting with the cafe workers and got even more scared about the drive that awaited us on the way to Skye. Finally, our boat was getting ready to load and we got some seats at the top. The view was gorgeous but sadly, we did not see the Loch Ness monster.
The drive to Skye could be accomplished by two ways. One is shorter but more terrifying, with one way roads and a small ferry boat. The other is longer and goes over a bridge but way easier to navigate. You can guess what we chose! Again, the drive was impressive going through the ‘three sisters’ mountains. We passed Eilean Donan castle on the way and finally arrived at our tiny hotel above a pub. A good meal and a pint of beer was the perfect way to end the day!
